Handler Notes

Overall Course Progress Athena has made steady and encouraging progress throughout her 5-day socialisation course. When Athena arrived on Day 1, she was very aware of her surroundings and could become nervous when people approached her or walked behind her. Although she moved freely around the other dogs, she was not yet comfortable enough to actively engage in play. Over the five days, Athena gradually became more settled and comfortable within the environment. She has learned to look to her handler for guidance when something catches her attention and is showing better recovery when she becomes unsure. Her progress has been gradual rather than dramatic, which is completely normal when building confidence. The important thing is that she has consistently moved forward. Obedience & Focus Athena’s response to basic commands has been one of her strongest areas throughout the course. We worked on: * Name recognition * Recall * Sit * Focus and engagement * Listening around distractions * Following handler guidance Athena responds very well to her name and commands and is willing to work with her handler. Her focus has improved, particularly when there are distractions around her. We recommend continuing to reinforce these skills at home so that her obedience becomes reliable in different environments. Walks & Environmental Confidence This was one of Athena’s main areas of focus during the course. Initially, she was highly aware of people around her and could become nervous when someone approached or appeared behind her. By the end of the course, Athena showed better awareness and recovery. She is still naturally observant, but she is becoming better at processing what is happening around her and looking to her handler for direction. She should continue to experience different environments in a controlled and positive way. The aim is not to stop her from noticing her surroundings, but to teach her that she can remain calm when something changes around her. Socialisation & Interaction Athena has become more comfortable being around other dogs. She is able to move freely around the group and is showing improved tolerance and confidence around other dogs. She is still not a dog that immediately seeks out play, and we do not want to force this. The focus should remain on comfortable social interaction rather than simply getting her to play. Allowing Athena to approach other dogs voluntarily, observe them and disengage when she wants to will help her develop healthy social confidence. Final Assessment Athena has completed the 5-day course with positive progress in confidence, environmental awareness, focus and social comfort. Her biggest strength is her willingness to listen and respond to her handler. Her biggest ongoing area of development is confidence around unexpected movement, people approaching and becoming more comfortable engaging socially. She should continue to receive positive exposure and should not be rushed into situations that make her uncomfortable. Key areas to continue working on: * Confidence around people * Calm responses to people approaching * People walking behind her * Focus around distractions * Recall * Basic obedience * Positive dog-to-dog interaction * Voluntary engagement and play * Confidence in new environments ATHENA’S AT-HOME CONTINUATION PROGRAMME The work should continue at home so that the progress made during the course becomes part of Athena’s normal behaviour. 1. Name & Recall – Daily Start inside the house and then progress to the garden and quieter outdoor areas. Exercise: * Say “Athena” once. * When she looks at you, praise her. * Call her to you. * Reward when she comes. * Gradually increase the distance and distractions. Keep sessions short and positive. 2. Sit & Focus Ask Athena to sit and calmly focus on you. Hold her attention for a few seconds before releasing her. Gradually increase the time. Goal: Teach Athena that checking in with her handler is rewarding. 3. Confidence Walks Take Athena for regular walks in different but manageable environments. Do not deliberately overwhelm her. If someone approaches or walks behind her and she becomes unsure: * Remain calm. * Give her space. * Call her attention back to you. * Reward calm behaviour. * Continue walking once she is relaxed. Avoid forcing her to greet people. 4. People Approaching Practise with people Athena already knows. Have the person approach calmly from a distance. Reward Athena for remaining relaxed. Gradually decrease the distance over multiple sessions. If she becomes uncomfortable, increase the distance again. 5. 🚶 People Walking Behind Her This should be introduced gradually. Have someone she trusts walk behind her at a comfortable distance. Reward Athena for remaining relaxed and focusing on her handler. Over time, the person can gradually get closer. 6. Dog Socialisation Continue exposing Athena to calm, balanced dogs. Do not force her to play. Allow her to: Observe → Approach → Interact → Move away. It is perfectly acceptable if Athena chooses to simply walk alongside another dog rather than play. The goal is a dog who is comfortable and confident around other dogs, not a dog who has to interact with every dog she meets. 7. Mental Engagement Include simple training throughout the day rather than doing one long training session. Ask for: Name → Sit → Focus → Release before meals, walks, going through doors or other activities. This will help Athena learn that listening to her handler is part of everyday life. Recommended Daily Routine Morning: 10-minute confidence walk + recall practice During the day: Short obedience exercises during normal activities Afternoon/evening: Controlled exposure to people or other dogs Evening: 5–10 minutes of calm focus, sit and recall exercises Keep training positive, short and consistent. Final Message Athena has made some lovely progress over her five days with us. She started the course very aware of her surroundings and unsure about certain approaches and movements around her. She has finished the course more settled, more comfortable in the environment and increasingly able to look to her handler for guidance. Her confidence will continue to develop with patience, consistency and positive experiences. The next step is not to push Athena harder, but to continue giving her opportunities to succeed and gradually expand her comfort zone. Athena has made a positive start — now the most important part is keeping the training going at home.
